Team Build Opportunities

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) partners with a diverse range of groups to build a Greater Los Angeles. Team builds are an excellent way to engage your organization in a meaningful group experience.

Opportunities are on a first-come, first-served basis and include working on new construction or home preservation projects, and helping in our ReStores. We also have creative opportunities like our Playhouse Build Program where we can bring Habitat LA to your office, home, or neighborhood! Learn more about this program in the FAQ section below. Through our team building opportunities, we engage a variety of volunteers from companies, to the entertainment industry, faith and community-based groups, as well as veterans, and active military. We also have unique build opportunities for individuals looking to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or any other major milestone.

Construction Team Build Day*
New construction build days are offered year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsorship is required and we can generally accommodate up to 15 participants per team build. We also offer sponsorships to accommodate larger groups. Please complete the group interest form and we will be in contact with you. Playhouse Team Build Day*
This is a mobile program where we can bring Habitat to you! If you don’t have a location to host a build, we can host it at one of our three ReStore locations. Availability is also year-round. Each playhouse can accommodate up to 10 volunteers for an all-day shift or 20 people split into two shifts. We can accommodate small or large groups; the more people, the more playhouses that are built! Teams contribute a tax-deductible sponsorship donation to cover the cost of materials and support our work in the community. Habitat LA provides all the materials, tools, training, and supervision. ReStore Day
Groups of 10 or less can volunteer at a Habitat LA ReStore (non-construction). ReStore opportunities are flexible and can be done in shifts; no sponsorship is required. We have three locations in Greater LA.

We build year-round, Wednesday – Saturday. In general, we advise interested groups contact us at least three months prior to their desired team build day as we typically schedule groups to 3-6 months in advance. Saturdays are the most popular days for team builds, so please consider a weekday if possible. Additionally, we experience a high volume of requests for summer months. We require a minimum of two weeks' notice prior to scheduling.

What to Expect
One goal is that everyone is SAFE and has FUN while they work! Habitat LA wants to provide a fulfilling experience and we believe the time you spend giving back will be rewarding in ways you never imagined. Your team will have the opportunity to build strong relationships while engaging in meaningful work for those in your community.

Schedule: The typical build day schedule is 8 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. including a break for lunch. Playhouse builds are 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Waivers: All participants are be required to complete an online registration profile and waiver prior to the build day. Our team will provide the instructions and sign up link a month out from your scheduled activity. For those volunteering in the ReStore, you will complete and bring a paper form on the day of your activity.
Photography: We encourage taking photos the day of your build! We will take a group photo of your team with the Habitat LA banner. If you would like to bring/hire a photographer, please note they are also required to complete the registration and waiver.
Weather: We typically build rain or shine, but if weather conditions cause safety concerns, then your build day could be rescheduled. We try to provide as much advance notice as the weather allows, and contact volunteers via email.

What to Wear
Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Please do not wear garments that could easily get caught on objects or in power tools. For cooler months, please wear layered clothing for weather changes. Shirts with sleeves are required; t-shirts are okay, but no tank tops or spaghetti straps. Long pants are required; shorts are not allowed due to safety concerns. Volunteers who do not show up in the proper attire will not be allowed on the build site. Boots or sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required.

What to Bring
Please leave your valuables at home as there is no secure storage at any of our sites. We have toolbelts on site which can hold small wallets, keys and your cell phone. We provide all the safety equipment (hard hat, goggles, earplugs, face masks, gloves, etc.) and the tools you’ll need. We ask that you do not bring your own tools or equipment on site.

We recommend all participants also bring sunblock, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle. We have filtered water dispensers on site.

Meals are typically not provided. We invite your team to bring coffee and donuts on site in the morning, or coolers/snacks for throughout the day.

For lunch, we ask all volunteers remain on site and many groups will cater lunch. We can provide a list of our preferred lunch vendors; however, the choice is yours.

Teams contribute a tax-deductible donation (based on the size of your group) to cover the equivalent cost of equipment, materials and training. More importantly, this support allows us to provide affordable housing opportunities for families and communities. Your team’s contribution is crucial in helping those in need. Builds are often sponsored by corporate giving, community fundraising, or fundraising through social media. Habitat LA staff can provide guidance in meeting your fundraising goals.
