Three Families to Receive Keys to New Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles Homes in Inglewood

“Home for the Holidays” Dedication Scheduled for December 2, 2016

Los Angeles, CA (December 1, 2016) – On December 2, 2016, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) will celebrate the completion of the Thriving Heights community and its three new homeowners in Inglewood, CA. A dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting will take place from 11:00am to 1:00pm where donors, volunteers and Habitat LA staff will welcome three families home for the holidays.

Construction on this community began on Veterans Day 2015 with more than 100 corporate, active military and veteran volunteers. Tamara Lindsay is one of the new homeowners and she is a veteran. Elvira Mercado and her son, Jonathan Mendez, are purchasing one of the homes, which they will share with Jonathan’s daughter, Ashley. Girmachew Assefa, Azalech Abate and their two children are also purchasing their first home.

For these families, the journey to homeownership included homeownership education classes and completing 500 hours of sweat equity volunteering with Habitat LA. Each family also has good credit and will pay back a zero-equivalent mortgage.

Thrivent Financial committed $225,000 and volunteer support to help build the Thriving Heights community. To date, the financial services company has partnered with Habitat LA to build 13 homes in greater Los Angeles. In addition, Habitat LA will recognize the contributions of Edison International and The Albertsons Companies Foundation and The Vons Foundation to this project.

“We are looking forward to dedicating the Thrivent Heights Community so that these families can celebrate the holidays in their homes for the very first time.” says Erin Rank, President & CEO of Habitat LA. “The strength and stability that homeownership provides is a gift that will keep on giving for many years to come.”
