Showing Appreciation for Heroes During this Year’s Veterans Build

Habitat LA provided critical home repairs two weeks leading up to Veteran’s Day

In time for Veteran’s Day weekend, this month Habitat LA along with its sponsors and volunteers, provided critical home repair to four local families as part of our year-long efforts to serve veterans through our Habitat for Heroes program.  Volunteers and Habitat LA staff tackled roof repair, exterior painting, and stucco repair among other critical improvements that will significantly improve the quality of life for our incredible veterans and their loved ones.

During our first week of repairs, the Habitat LA team of construction workers and volunteers visited the home of Barbara in Pico Rivera.  Barbara, the widow of a United States Marine who was killed during combat in the Vietnam War, received much needed repairs to her roof. “When it would rain, we would have to put pans on the stove because the water was coming down. There were leaks in the restroom too,” said Barbara.

The work didn’t stop there.  During our second week of home repairs, we visited the home of John, who has lived in the Long Beach area with his wife and five children for more than 50 years.  The family received new windows, stucco repair, and a fresh coat of paint to the home’s exterior.

Habitat LA completes repairs and renovations for veterans and active-duty military homeowners to help alleviate health and safety issues in and around the home. Our Habitat for Heroes program began in 2011 as an outreach initiative seeking to engage veterans, active-duty members and their families. Since then, more than 4,000 veterans have volunteered with us, and over 275 have benefited from our housing services. Habitat LA is committed to providing more opportunities for veterans and active-duty members of the military and encourages everyone to get involved with Habitat for Heroes.

These critical home repairs were made possible through financial and volunteer support from City National Bank, Home Depot, Bank of America, The Douglas Foundation, Prologis, SoCalGas, Ring, HITT, and Sons of American Legion Squadron 283.
