Yesterday afternoon Former President Carter made an announcement that he was diagnosed with cancer. We are very saddened by this news. The Former President shared that, “Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.”
Each year since 1984, President and Mrs. Carter have dedicated a week of their time building homes with Habitat for Humanity here in the U.S. and around the world. Habitat LA staff have been fortunate to build alongside the Carter’s at many Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work projects, including two here in Los Angeles in 1995 and 2007.
Everyone who has built with President Carter is always struck by his work ethic. He, often times, is the first one to the build site in the morning and the last one to leave at the end of the day. We know President Carter will display this same strength and determination as he undergoes treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with him as well as his whole family.
Update: Erin Rank, Habitat LA ‘s President & CEO, was interviewed by CBS’ Dave Bryan on Former President Carter’s work here in Los Angeles. Check out the interview HERE.
