Rebuilding Hope After the Fires: How Habitat LA ReStores Are Supporting Survivors, One Family at a Time

As wildfires continue to impact families across Southern California, our ReStores are at the heart of Habitat LA’s relief response—offering hope, resources, and a helping hand to those starting over.

Fast, Compassionate Action

Torrance ReStore GM Ryan Graham shared how our team rapidly mobilized to coordinate donations, secure logistics, and deliver essentials. “Our goal was to streamline the process and get vital household items into the hands of survivors fast,” he said.

To date, Habitat LA has received over $5 million in donated goods and distributed $750,000 in ReStore gift cards—empowering survivors to rebuild with dignity and choice.

The Power of Teamwork

At the Bellflower ReStore, Store Manager Lucille Schiavone described the powerful team effort behind the scenes: “Our team have worked tirelessly, without a roadmap, to build a seamless process. They’ve coordinated with donors to bring in everything from mattresses and bedding to air purifiers and personal care items.”

Lucille added, “We’ve all worked together to help survivors find some sense of normalcy as they take the next steps forward. Seeing people’s appreciation has reminded me how quickly life can change—and how important it is to show up for each other.”

Moments That Stay with Us

The relief efforts are filled with heartfelt encounters that serve as powerful reminders of why this work matters.

Daniel Castro, Store Manager at another Habitat LA ReStore, recalled helping two sisters who came in for the first time. “They were overwhelmed. One sister could hardly believe it, the other was holding back tears. As I helped them gather items, one kept thanking me, and the other hugged me, crying.”

Daniel also met a young family—mother, father, and daughter—who had lost everything. Despite their loss, they were upbeat, full of hope, and their daughter was so happy. “I shared with them that my wife is expecting and how inspirational they were as parents. Their daughter told me she’d be friends with my child. The next morning, the family came back with the grandparents, excited to show them the store.”

For Lucille, a powerful moment came while helping a woman who had miraculously found her late mother’s dining table untouched by the flames. “She said she felt her mother was with her, and it gave her great comfort. As we gathered her items, she asked my name. When I told her it was Lucille, her face lit up— ‘That was my mother’s name too,’ she said. We hugged and praised God for His goodness.”
