Honoring Those Who Serve Our Country

Honoring Those Who Serve Our Country

This month, Habitat LA was honored to provide critically needed home repairs to service-disabled U.S. Air Force veteran and Whittier resident, Daniel Munoz, Sr. so that he may continue to reside in his home comfortably and safely.

Mr. Munoz was born in East Los Angeles and adopted into a family of seven. The son of a WWII Purple Heart veteran, Mr. Munoz rose to the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in the United States Air Force Security Forces. He served from 1977-1981 in the U.S. and Germany. During his service in Germany, he guarded nuclear weapons among other classified areas.

Along with Habitat LA staff, four Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, also volunteered at Mr. Munoz’s home on October 7th. Together, we repaired Mr. Munoz’s eaves and fascia boards, painted the gutters, repaired and painted the exterior stucco and installed new smoke detectors and carbon monoxide sensors.  This special day was organized and sponsored by the Military and Veterans Appreciation Trust Foundation (MVAT Foundation), which is dedicated to assisting veterans, service members in transition, military spouses, and Gold Star family survivors with their post-military career success through its Heroes Linked and other programs. Additionally, thanks to Owens Corning and its nationwide Roof Deployment Project for donating top of the line materials, and to local roofing company and Platinum Preferred Contractor Roof Repair Specialist, who brought out a team of skilled technicians to donate their time and talents to the installation!  Lastly, Mr. Munoz will also receive a tankless water heater later this month through a local partnership with SoCalGas.

Repair and renovation services like that of Mr. Munoz’s are one component of Habitat LA’s Habitat for Heroes program. Founded in 2011, the outreach initiative seeks to engage and serve Veterans, active-duty members, and their families year-round, through individual and institutional services.   To date, over 275 Veterans and active-duty military members have benefited from the Habitat for Heroes program.  During the first two weeks in November, in honor of Veterans Day, Habitat LA will provide three veterans and a military widow with critically needed home repairs in Cerritos, Inglewood, Long Beach and Pico Rivera.

A very special thanks to the MVAT Foundation, Owens Corning and Roof Repair Specialist for their commitment to honoring and serving our local heroes!
