LOS ANGELES, CA, (May 4, 2017) – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) and future Habitat homeowners will work alongside Lowe’s volunteers and an all-female construction crew on May 9th during Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual National Women Build Week, May 6-14. Habitat’s National Women Build Week invites women to help make a difference and devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities.
More than 17,000 women, including Lowe’s Heroes volunteers, are expected to volunteer at construction sites across the country as part of Habitat’s 2017 National Women Build Week.
“Lowe’s partnership has made a big impact on our ability to build more Habitat homes in our community and we applaud their dedication to empowering women through National Women Build Week,” said Erin Rank, President & CEO, Habitat LA. “We are thrilled to build alongside so many female Lowe’s Heroes and our future homeowners while celebrating the power within us all to change lives.”
More than 50 volunteers from local Lowe’s stores will help build new homes currently underway in the city of Downey. Volunteers will be doing both interior and exterior work such as hanging drywall and installing the siding. Lowe’s heroes will host its Women Leadership Meeting onsite that morning and their DIY clinics on June 1st at both the Norwalk and Mid-City stores.
In addition to local Lowe’s volunteers, current and future homeowners, popular blogger and best-selling author Emily Schuman, of Cupcakes and Cashmere, will also be building. Launched in 2008, Emily’s site explores delicious personal recipes, recommendations from experts she swears by, her classic sense of décor and personal style, her take on natural beauty, chic DIYs, and motherhood. Emily is known for cultivating rich content and a super-engaged following. Habitat LA is thrilled to have her participate in National Women Build Week and to be able to share her Habitat LA experience with her loyal following.
Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable housing and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by many. Each year, Lowe’s provides the support of their employee volunteers, Lowe’s Heroes, and conducts how-to clinics at stores.

Lowe’s donated nearly $2 million to this year’s National Women Build Week, including a $5,000 store gift card to Habitat LA. Since 2003, Lowe’s has committed more than $63 million to Habitat’s mission and helped more than 6,500 families improve their living conditions.
Habitat’s first Women Build event was held in 1998. Since then, all-women construction crews have helped build more than 2,500 homes in partnership with families.
