Volunteers and veterans will help build three new homes in the City of Inglewood
Los Angeles, CA (November 11, 2015) – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) will honor and thank the veteran community through its Veterans Build on November 11th. More than 100 veterans, active military and volunteers will come together to begin building three Habitat LA homes in the City of Inglewood. The Veterans Build will take place from 8:30am-4:00pm and participants will include veteran volunteers from Team Rubicon, the MVAT Foundation, California State University Long Beach and local Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard bases. During the lunch program, participants will hear from Belete Belhu, a veteran Habitat LA partner homebuyer, as well as Brenda Threatt, program director for U.S. Vets, among others.
The Veterans Build will highlight Habitat LA’s veteran outreach initiative, Habitat for Heroes, which was established in 2011 to create affordable housing solutions and volunteer opportunities for veterans, active military and their families. To date, more than 4,000 veterans have volunteered and more than 60 veterans have been served through home repairs or homeownership opportunities. One of the three homes being worked on during Veterans Build is designated for a future Veteran homebuyer.
“Nearly four million veteran households pay more than 30 percent of their income for housing and we believe there is a growing need for affordable housing options and other related resources in the veteran community,” says Erin Rank, Habitat LA President and CEO. “This year’s Veterans Build is about thanking veterans and active military for their service as well as engaging them through our Habitat for Heroes program.”
The Albertsons Companies Foundation and The Vons Foundation is the lead sponsor of this year’s Veterans Build and has been working with Habitat LA since 2012 to serve veterans and revitalize neighborhoods throughout greater Los Angeles. In addition to supporting this build day with funds, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions will also be sending out employee volunteers, many of whom are veterans. Mercury Insurance is also supporting Habitat LA’s veterans initiative as a top sponsor of this year’s event.
“We are thrilled to be working with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles for the third year to support our veterans,” said Lori Raya, president of Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions and Habitat LA board member, “with so many veteran employees and customers, it is important that we take time to honor their service and support programs that enrich their lives as they have enriched ours.
The 2015 Veterans Build will take place in the City of Inglewood. Media interested in covering can contact Ali Mullin at amullin@dev.habitatla.org and the exact address will be forwarded upon RSVP.
