With the new fiscal year upon us, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) closed out the 2018-2019 fiscal year with a bang! Our Habitat LA team took the time to reflect on the many milestones accomplished over the last twelve months, including fundraising over $8.2 million dollars which helped successfully cement the close of our five-year capital campaign with over $100 million raised to help solve the housing crisis in Los Angeles. We couldn’t have done it without the support of so many donors, volunteers and advocates over the past five years. We thank each of you for being a part of our Habitat LA family. Together, we made the following huge strides in our commitment to affordable housing in the greater Los Angeles area.
Our 2018-2019 fiscal year was filled with new challenges and new achievements and we wanted to share a few highlights.
Advocacy
We joined Habitat organizations across the country to launch Cost of Home, a new national advocacy campaign aimed at improving home affordability for 10 million people in the U.S. over the next five years.
Construction/Community Development
We built, rebuilt or repaired 95 homes this year. We will build our 1000th home in the new fiscal year!
We partnered in a first-time collaboration with the City of Los Angeles and four of the nation’s top construction companies (Clark Construction, Gilbane Building Company, Turner Construction Company, and The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company) to build four new homes in just 11 days for future Habitat homeowners in the Willowbrook area of the city of Los Angeles.
We trained over 25 new crew leaders. This allowed us to really expand our Playhouse Build Program, completing 56 playhouses and raising a total of $283,000.
Finance/Operations/Resource Development
We successfully fundraised over $8.2 million dollars through donations, corporate sponsorships and special events; exceeding our annual $8 million-dollar goal. This milestone propelled us to magnificently finish the five-year capital campaign goal to raise $100 million dollars, bringing in almost $101 million dollars to continue building homes, communities and hope.
Habitat LA ReStores
Our three ReStore locations (Bellflower, Torrance, and Los Angeles) collectively generated close to $7.8 million in sales, that helped fund Habitat LA’s mission to provide affordable housing for the residents of the greater Los Angeles area. We also launched an e-commerce site that will reach an even larger audience to support our mission through ReStore purchases in the new year.
Programs
We actively engaged in disaster response helping wildfire victims to repair and rebuild their homes after the recent fires. Our Programs team spearheaded a long-term recovery group and will continue their work in the new fiscal year to help families whose homes were lost. We also helped 1,300 individuals and families through our community education and homeownership programs.
Volunteers
Nearly 8,000 volunteers donated over 121,000 hours of services to not only strengthen our team but also our community.
With almost three decades of operations under our belt, these accomplishments reflect people like you working together to make a difference each day! All our work helps Habitat families to help themselves. Your generous support has transformed the lives and communities of our beautiful Los Angeles area. Cheers to the new fiscal year!
