On February 6, the City of Long Beach, in partnership with The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC), and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) celebrated the dedication of a new five-bedroom, 2 ¾-bath home that has provided the opportunity for a lower-income family to purchase their first home.
“The City is proud to work with Habitat LA to help a well-deserving family achieve the dream of homeownership,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “This effort is yet another example of how strongly the City values its commitment to providing quality, affordable housing to the working families of Long Beach.”
Located at 105 W. 14th St., in the Washington Neighborhood, this site is one of three properties conveyed to Habitat LA by The LBCIC as part of a three home development, and is the final single-family residence to be completed.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the dedication of another Habitat home in our community,” said Councilmember Lena Gonzalez. “Sustainable housing projects not only impact individual quality of life, but also benefit the community at large by promoting vitality and livability throughout our neighborhoods.”
The single-family residence was constructed using sustainable materials and environmentally friendly building practices, and will incorporate energy-efficient appliances.
“It brings us great satisfaction to see such a rewarding project come to fruition,” said John Thomas, The LBCIC Chair. “The LBCIC is dedicated to investing our resources to remove blight, transform properties, and accommodate vital uses that allow Long Beach to continue to flourish.”
This dedication will celebrate the home of Yvette Nelson and her family. Nelson is a qualified first-time homebuyer earning less than 80% of the Los Angeles County Median Income (AMI). Selected homebuyers are also required to invest “sweat equity” hours toward the construction of their home.
“We have walked side-by-side with Ms. Nelson on her journey toward homeownership and know that her family will make a great addition to the Washington Neighborhood,” said Erin Rank, President/CEO of Habitat LA. “We feel fortunate to have such strong partners in the City of Long Beach and The LBCIC who are working closely with us to build homes and stronger neighborhoods in the greater Long Beach area.”
In addition to the completion of this development, Habitat LA will continue to focus on the Washington Neighborhood during its five year, $100 million Building a Greater Los Angeles campaign.
