Today marks the conclusion of AmeriCorps Week. Each year during this week, Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the country celebrate and recognize the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums by highlighting the extraordinary impact they make across our nation every day.
It all began 22 years ago, when Habitat for Humanity partnered with The Corporation for National and Community Service, to place 122 individuals in five locations to support its work. Today, nearly 550 AmeriCorps members serve with Habitat for Humanity in 38 states throughout the U.S. and D.C.
Through this partnership, nearly 9,600 Habitat AmeriCorps members have served over 26,000 families, engaged more than 3.5 million volunteers and raised tens of millions of dollars to meet the housing needs of families in the U.S.
In 2015-16, Habitat AmeriCorps members served 2,207 families, more than a quarter of the families Habitat for Humanity touched in the U.S. that year. During the 2016-17 service year, AmeriCorps members are anticipated to serve more than 1,600 families, provide more than one million hours of service and engage more than 200,000 volunteers in local community building efforts. At Habitat LA, we proudly have eight members working with us to build homes and hope.
It’s been a fantastic week celebrating our current AmeriCorps members, which was highlighted with a special build day on Wednesday, March 8th. We thank our Habitat LA AmeriCorps members and alums for helping us Build a Greater LA! We hope you enjoy the photos from our AmeriCorps build day and share them to celebrate the great work they do every day!
The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
