World Habitat Day. When Maslow created his Hierarchy of Needs, the foundation for a human to achieve self-actualization is rooted in basic needs: food, air, shelter. That was in 1943. Fast forward to 2014, we are still struggling for those basic needs. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity and the UN for taking this day to recognize the need for basic & sustainable housing for all people around the world. I have been working with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles for the past five years. Delta Air Lines Employees to Build Third Habitat for Humanity Home in Long Beach

More than 2,000 Delta employees volunteer on construction projects from coast to coast Los Angeles, CA (September 9, 2013) – Delta Air Lines employees are rolling up their sleeves to renovate another home with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) as part of a multi-build volunteer effort. Home Completion Celebration Took Place Saturday, April 14th Los Angeles, CA – April 17, 2012: A little over a month ago, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA), Rt. Rev. Alexei Smith, Director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and volunteers gathered at a home in South Gate to kickoff the 2012 Lent Build: 40 Days of Building on Faith. Los Angeles, CA -- May 5, 2011 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’ (HFH GLA) AmeriCorps National and VISTA members will travel to Milwaukee, WI to participate in Habitat for Humanity International’s annual AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon. HFH GLA AmeriCorps Members This year’s build will engage more than 440 AmeriCorps National and VISTA members during the month of May through seven regional events scheduled during or around National AmeriCorps Week (May 14-21). The event will highlight local community needs for affordable housing and the members’ service with Habitat. This year’s Build-a-Thon event sites include: Franklin, W. Homeowners Encouraged to Apply & Volunteers Needed to Help Complete the Work Los Angeles, CA – March 09, 2011: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has an opportunity for residents in the City of Hawaiian Gardens to receive free home repairs through its A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) program. Homeowners in need of exterior home repairs who are unable to make the repairs themselves due to physical or financial circumstances are encouraged to apply. Ten qualified applicants will partner with the organization to receive exterior home repairs through ABWK. The program is a time-efficient alternative to Hawaiian Gardens’ Beautification Program because an all-volunteer workforce works with the selected homeowners to complete the repairs in a matter of days. Norwalk Residents & Businesses Encouraged to Shop, Donate & Volunteer at ReStore to Help Build Affordable Housing in the Community Los Angeles, CA – October 8, 2010: Two months after cutting the ribbon for Habitat for Humanity’s 700th ReStore, Mayor Gordon Stefenhagen returned to celebrate the partnership between the city of Norwalk and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) and to promote donations. The ReStore, located at 11029 Alondra Blvd., provides affordable new and gently used home items at drastically reduced prices. Along with City Hall staff and Chamber of Commerce members, Mayor Stefenhagen toured the ReStore to demonstrate his city’s support and to garner more support from local residents and businesses.
