Posted by Sylvia Bautista, Homeowner Relations Case Manager & Proud Habitat Homeowner: This week we celebrated World Habitat Day (WHD), a day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. For me it’s a day where words travel through social media, word of mouth, and people’s hearts about the importance of affordable housing. This year’s World Habitat Day was especially inspiring, since I had an opportunity to participate in six home dedications. Habitat LA staff and board members visited families and dedicated homes in the City of Long Beach. Through these dedications and home visits, I had the opportunity to see the true impact affordable housing has on families, children, and our community. Mr. Chanto, lives with his wife and two daughters in a beautiful Spanish style home. ...

The 10th Annual “Power Women Power Tools” event was held Saturday, June 21, 2014 in the City of Lynwood. I had the privilege to work alongside strong women from different backgrounds. As we worked together to build the remaining 4 townhouses, I felt an extreme joy to know that soon my fellow Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles homeowner applicants would each have the opportunity to be homeowners of a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom townhouse. As a homeowner applicant, I look forward to continuing to build homes, and one day look forward to owning my own home. I thank Habitat LA for allowing me to participate in this PWPT event and I look forward to next year’s event.

We love our partner homeowners and it’s an honor to share their stories about how homeownership has enriched their family’s lives. On Saturday, June 7th 2014, we had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony for Maywood Academy High School for Tanya Silerio and Luis Delgado Jr., held at East Los Angeles College. Last March, the Silerio family received the keys to their new Habitat home and it was a day they had all been anticipating. They were overwhelmed with joy and started planning how to decorate long before moving in. This past weekend, The Silerios experienced another joyful moment as daughter, Tanya Silerio graduated from Maywood Academy High School. Luis Delgado Jr. also graduated from Maywood Academy High School this past weekend. The Delgado family  became Habitat partner homeowners this past year, after 15 years of renting a two-bedroom house. ...
