Posted by Sylvia Bautista, Homeowner Relations Case Manager & Proud Habitat Homeowner: This week we celebrated World Habitat Day (WHD), a day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. For me it’s a day where words travel through social media, word of mouth, and people’s hearts about the importance of affordable housing. This year’s World Habitat Day was especially inspiring, since I had an opportunity to participate in six home dedications. Habitat LA staff and board members visited families and dedicated homes in the City of Long Beach. Through these dedications and home visits, I had the opportunity to see the true impact affordable housing has on families, children, and our community. Mr. Chanto, lives with his wife and two daughters in a beautiful Spanish style home. ...

A Prayer For Shelter

It is not uncommon for people to stop what they are doing and bow their heads in a silent moment of gratitude, of hope, or to ask for help -- otherwise known as “prayer.” This powerful tool is very familiar to us, where “Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.” Therefore it seemed only fitting that Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has its very own Prayer for Shelter, authored by our very own Patty Lee. Originally written for 2007’s National Day of Prayer, we have continued to use this prayer over the years, and to share it with the numerous congregations who help support us in our mission. In honor of World Habitat Day tomorrow, we invite you to join us in a moment of gratitude, hope, and the ...

Monday, October 6, 2014 is World Habitat Day and you may be asking yourself, “What is World Habitat Day?” World Habitat Day is a day dedicated to recognizing the basic need for decent and affordable housing in a world where it is lacking for so many. This annual recognition began in 1985 when The United Nations General Assembly declared that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day. World Habitat Day is a day of grassroots action and education on why housing is so important. At Habitat LA, we know that housing is the foundation for so many more important things in life like education, employment, physical and mental health. We want you, however, to hear this firsthand from a partner homeowner, a teacher and someone who has built with us overseas. This is why in ...

We love our partner homeowners and it’s an honor to share their stories about how homeownership has enriched their family’s lives. On Saturday, June 7th 2014, we had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony for Maywood Academy High School for Tanya Silerio and Luis Delgado Jr., held at East Los Angeles College. Last March, the Silerio family received the keys to their new Habitat home and it was a day they had all been anticipating. They were overwhelmed with joy and started planning how to decorate long before moving in. This past weekend, The Silerios experienced another joyful moment as daughter, Tanya Silerio graduated from Maywood Academy High School. Luis Delgado Jr. also graduated from Maywood Academy High School this past weekend. The Delgado family  became Habitat partner homeowners this past year, after 15 years of renting a two-bedroom house. ...
