Los Angeles, CA – March 22, 2008: Today, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (www.habitatla.org,) in partnership with Radio Disney, hosted a booth at the annual “Big Bunny’s Spring Fling” event at the L.A. Zoo. Youth United representatives attended the event in an effort to engage students and parents in its “Nickels for Nails” program, which unites youth ages 5 to 25 to work together to raise money and awareness for affordable housing. On this same day in partnership with the City of Lynwood, Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a three unit site where youth hope to fully build and fund one home.
“Our partnership with Radio Disney gives us an amazing opportunity to reach young people and empower them to make a difference,” said Erin Rank, president/CEO, Habitat for Humanity GLA. “The students who participate in this program will be able to see the results of their efforts and get to know the family whose life has been changed by their hard work.”
The youth are the leaders, planners, fundraisers, public relations specialists and builders in the “Nickels for Nails” program. The program helps to teach young people to become leaders and engages people
from different ages, backgrounds, and faiths to work together. Youth ages 5 to 25 will work together to raise money and awareness, while youth ages 16 to 25 will actually build the house alongside the Partner Family homeowners. Over 10,000 children and parents are expected to attend “Big Bunny’s Spring Fling,” which continues through Sunday and includes various children’s activities such as face painting; carrot planting; crafts and live bunnies.
