Los Angeles, CA – September 17, 2008: Habitat for Humanity has built over 230 affordable homes in the Greater Los Angeles over the past 16 years thanks to the support of numerous volunteers, donors and government officials. To thank those who have helped make a difference in the lives of hundreds of hardworking low income families and to ensure several more are afforded the same opportunity, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles is hosting a “Building a Greater Los Angeles” Gala. The celebration and fundraiser supports the organization’s “Building a Greater Los Angeles” campaign and honorees include Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver & Family; Citi Smith Barney & Jerrold Eberhardt, Hon. Henry Cisneros; and Ed Begley, Jr. The ‘green carpet’ gala will take place Wednesday, October 1st at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Honored guests will hear from habitat partner families and enjoy a special musical performance. The “Diamonds and Denim Affair” honors everyone who has helped build 230 homes and counting.

WHY: Los Angeles ranks last in affordable housing in the U.S. and 30% of residents currently live in poverty. The organization relies on donors, volunteers, and support from city and state agencies to continue its mission to eliminate poverty housing. Building a Greater LA Gala will honor those who go above and beyond to support Habitat’s mission and recognize the men and women whose contributions have forever changed the lives of hundreds of local families. Tickets, tables and advertisements are available as well as sponsorships. The event’s proceeds will fund the Building a Greater Los Angeles campaign to build and renovate 250 more homes in the Los Angeles area.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER LOS ANGELES strives to eliminate poverty housing through advocacy, education and partnership with families in need to build simple, decent affordable housing. Since 1990, HFH GLA has built more than 230 homes, transforming the lives of hundreds of individuals. Habitat partner families qualify for a zero-interest loan for the cost of their home; volunteer 500 build hours and currently live in substandard conditions.
