Building a Greater Los Angeles Blog

This week we are very fortunate to have Navy men and women from the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln volunteering with us. Yesterday was the first day of what we are calling Navy Build Week and our Navy volunteers arrived at our build site in Lawndale to a big round of applause and KTLA’s Gayle Anderson. You can view one of her segments here.

We are at a point in construction where there are a variety of projects being tackled. Some of the volunteers were mixing stucco, applying stucco to a cinder block wall, adding trusses, using power saws and good old-fashioned hammers. They also had the opportunity to meet the Royce family, who will move into one of the homes they were working on. Meet two of our Navy volunteers in the short video below.

During lunch they took a much needed break from all of their hard work and the hot sun. Mark Van Lue, Chief Operating Officer for HFH GLA and Navy veteran, shared with the Navy volunteers information on Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Initiative. This is a new initiative that was recently announced during a meeting with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and will engage veterans more broadly in many different facets of Habitat for Humanity’s work. Learn more about it in the video below.
