How to Apply for A Brush with Kindness (ABwK)

How the Program Works

With the assistance of volunteers, ABwK helps hardworking, low-income homeowners restore and preserve their homes so they may continue to live in a decent, sustainable and affordable home.

Eligibility Requirements

Interested homeowners must:

  • Provide proof of homeownership and residency in the Greater Los Angeles region.
  • Partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.
  • Demonstrate financial need.  This program is for low-income households earning less than 80% of the area median income. See the eligibility income chart below.

A Partnership

ABwK is a partnership that relies on the homeowner’s involvement and participation.  If selected for the A Brush with Kindness program, homeowners must be willing to partner with HFH GLA, this includes:

  • Signing a Homeowner Neighborhood Covenant – homeowners pledge to partner with HFH GLA and perform the expected commitments of the ABwK program.
  • Completing 24 Sweat Equity  hours– the homeowner, a family member or friend of the homeowner, must be on site and willing to work in various capacities every day that the volunteers are there during ABwK, as well as perform approved non-construction activities.
  • Occupying the home for at least 3 years after the ABwK work has been completed.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with projects completed as funds and volunteers become available. Participant selection is based on financial need and the condition of the home.
