Homeowners Encouraged to Apply & Volunteers Needed to Help Complete the Work
Los Angeles, CA – March 09, 2011: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has an opportunity for residents in the City of Hawaiian Gardens to receive free home repairs through its A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) program. Homeowners in need of exterior home repairs who are unable to make the repairs themselves due to physical or financial circumstances are encouraged to apply. Ten qualified applicants will partner with the organization to receive exterior home repairs through ABWK. The program is a time-efficient alternative to Hawaiian Gardens’ Beautification Program because an all-volunteer workforce works with the selected homeowners to complete the repairs in a matter of days. For this reason, HFH GLA is also looking for volunteers to help work on the restoration of the homes.
“A Brush With Kindness is a powerful program because small repairs like paint and landscaping on a few homes go a long way toward revitalizing entire neighborhoods,” said Erin Rank, President & CEO of HFH GLA. “Hawaiian Gardens has been a great partner for us and we look forward to working with local homeowners and volunteers to improve the safety and appearance of more homes.”
ABWK provides zero-cost exterior home repairs (valued up to $10,000) that include, but are not limited to: exterior painting, window replacement, roof repairs, landscaping and other minor repairs. Applicants to the program must meet Habitat for Humanity and City of Hawaiian Gardens eligibility requirements and will be selected based on the greatest need for repairs. To be eligible individuals must prove homeownership and residency in the City of Hawaiian Gardens. They must also demonstrate a financial need. ABWK is a program designed to assist low-income homeowners earning less than 80% of area median income in Los Angeles County. Finally, applicants must commit to staying in their home a minimum of three years after repairs are completed, as well as to working alongside volunteers on the restoration of their home.
“A Brush with Kindness” is a way for homeowners and volunteers to improve and unify local communities. Applications are currently being accepted and are available at Hawaiian Gardens City Hall, or by calling 310.323.4663 x141. Individuals may also download an application, or register to volunteer online at www.habitatla.org. Completed applications should be returned to HFH GLA located at 17700 South Figueroa St. in Gardena, CA. 90248. Habitat for Humanity builds throughout Los Angeles Tuesday through Saturday, all year long and volunteer opportunities are available on an ongoing basis.
