Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) celebrates the extraordinary life of Sargent Shriver. We are thankful for the invaluable contributions and extraordinary leadership he provided to both the service and anti-poverty movements of the world.
HFH GLA has benefitted by many of Sargent Shriver’s social programs and organizations. He was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps and was the first Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity under President Lyndon Johnson; he developed the programs that comprised the “War on Poverty”: Head Start, VISTA, Job Corps, Community Action, Upward Bound, Foster Grandparents, and the National Center on Poverty Law Legal Services. For nearly 50 years these programs have made an impact and will continue to be an inspiration to individuals and organizations. We hope we all can aspire to follow his invaluable wisdom and example in our daily work; as we continue to build hope, lives and communities.
