We were thrilled when The Texas Tenors contacted us and offered their volunteer support while in Los Angeles last month.  Band members JC Fisher, Marcus Collins and John Hagen rose to fame on America’s Got Talent and have been touring ever since so you can imagine how excited we were to have them come out and spend their day off helping us build. The guys traded in their microphones and cowboy hats for hammers and nails to provide hands on help at our Lynwood construction site, where we are currently constructing seven new affordable, sustainable homes. Those generous cowboys spent their Saturday helping us weather proof the framed homes.  No easy task. And after a long day of hard labor, JC, Marcus and John stuck around to hand out CDs to the other volunteers, take photos and they also ...

Sylvia Bautista shares another beautiful story about giving keys to a deserving family in the City of South Gate just a few days before Thanksgiving.I had the pleasure of giving Patricia Ybarra the keys to her new Habitat for Humanity home in South Gate, California on Friday, November 22nd.  Patricia has faced many obstacles throughout her life, as have many of our partner homeowners, yet she was determined to purchase a safe home for she and her kids. Completing her sweat equity hours became ...

Sylvia Bautista shares another beautiful story about giving the keys to the Cortez-Hernandez family, which includes six daughters who were determined to give their mother the home she has always dreamed of owning.Maria Hernandez had to be both a mother and a father to her six girls as they were growing up. The girls are forever thankful for their mother who has always worked so hard to provide them with all of life’s necessities and partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) was their chance to thank her for all she has done.  Two of Maria’s daughters, Maricela and Lucia, decided to ...

Blog Posted by Karen Moore, ReStore Materials Acquisitions ManagerThe holiday season is upon us and you tell yourself “This year will be different”… you promise yourself that this year the holidays will be less hectic, you will have all of the shopping and the baking done early, and you will have it all together complete with a perfectly decorated house and plenty of time to relax with family and friends.  This holiday season will be stress-free. Then it hits you that when the dust settles from the holidays, 2013 will be over and you have tax season to look forward to. Blog Posted by Karen Moore, ReStore Materials Acquisitions ManagerSo, they’re calling the housing market in Los Angeles a “mini-bubble.”  Housing prices are going through the roof again. According to Redfin, over 90% of the houses for sale are generating multiple offers and the majority of them are getting asking price or more.  What’s driving the frenzy? Low inventory, low interest rates and all-cash offers from investors are driving up the prices. Seems like this would be an awesome time to be a realtor, right? Well, maybe. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that higher prices equal higher commissions. But the competition can be fierce.  Good luck getting a homeowner to list with you versus your competition.Personally, it’s rare that a week goes by that we don’t find some postcard or flyer from a local realtor trying to prove that they ...

Meet Laura Marquez, our Newest Homeowner in Lynwood

Last week, Laura Marquez received the keys to her Habitat for Humanity home in the City of Lynwood.  Laura brought her kids along, however she did not tell them that the house was ready.   She told them that she had to sign additional papers and then, once they got there, surprised them by handing her daughter the keys and telling her to open the door to their new home! The kids were so happy and immediately began making plans for everything they would like to do in their new house...  Their smiles from that day say it all.We asked Laura to tell us how it feels to be a new homeowner.“I am still in shock.  It’s surreal and feels like ...

Guest Blog: David’s Angels

We wanted to share this blog from a volunteer named David Garrett, who recently built with us and felt moved to share his experience on his professional blog.  David came out to build with his daughter, actress Beau Garrett, and two of her friends.  This was his first time building with us. After a conversation about the ReStores, David was instantly discussing sharing this on this blog – explaining that more of his realtor friends needed to know about the ReStores.   We are grateful to David for sharing his story and helping to spread the word about ReStores!  Enjoy his blog post, which also appears here, and as always if you moved to share it, we truly appreciate that!Shared by David Garrett:A Day in Long BeachMy daughter asked me along to ...

Posted by Chris Untiet, Faith Relations ManagerOur interfaith outreach dinner, held in May 2013, was an inspiring evening that will make a significant impact in our mission for years to come.  To see over 60 people from eight different faith traditions come together to share a meal, to hear from key leaders within greater Los Angeles’ faith community, and to brainstorm ways about how we can come together to build hope and better our communities was truly a dream come true.   We used the momentum and ideas from this dinner to organize the building of our first interfaith home.  The building of this home will kick off in November as part of seven new homes we will build in Lynwood, California.  It will also be a part of Habitat ...
