The Castillo Family Received Keys in a Home Dedication Ceremony Tuesday, November 16th
Los Angeles, CA – November 16, 2010: Today, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) and Delta Air Lines employee volunteers attended a much-anticipated home dedication ceremony for the Castillo family. Key staff members from both organizations were on hand to welcome the Castillo’s into their new home and present them with the keys. The ceremony also celebrated the hundreds of Delta Air Lines employees who volunteered to build the home that Delta Air Lines generously sponsored – making it possible for this home to be rehabilitated in just weeks. As well as volunteering with HFH GLA locally, in Long Beach, Delta Air Lines has demonstrated their strong commitment to affordable housing by partnering with Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Memphis, Minneapolis – St. Paul and New York City. More information on the Habitat for Humanity/Delta Air Lines U.S. builds are available online.
“It is amazing what can be accomplished when an organization comes together to build something positive,” says Erin Rank, President/CEO of HFH GLA. “Volunteers were encouraged to build on company time and it was beautiful to see how many returned again and again on their days off. By doing so, they have changed the lives of the Castillo family for generations in just a few weeks.”
Every Wednesday through Saturday since September 8th, a minimum of 25 Delta employees worked with HFH GLA crew leaders to rehabilitate a three-bedroom home in Long Beach. The employee enthusiasm for this project is something that began with Delta’s highest levels of management. On September 22nd, Delta Executives from Los Angeles to Atlanta pitched in to help with the home’s framing, roofing, flooring and more. Watch a video here.
“Delta Air Lines has been building with Habitat for Humanity since 2000 and we are thrilled that this year we had the opportunity to rehabilitate a home in Long Beach,” says Barry Matthews, Delta Air Lines’ Coordinator of External Affairs & Community Relations. “Taking something old and turning it into something new has been a symbolic and rewarding experience for all of us at Delta Air Lines. We look forward to rehabilitating more homes for Habitat for Humanity families.”
The Delta home will belong to single and expecting mother, Wendy Castillo, as well as her six month old baby and mother. Castillo, who was recently selected as a HFH GLA homeowner, works at St. Mary’s hospital in Long Beach. HFH GLA offers hardworking families and individuals a hand up, not a hand out. Castillo is required to put in 200 hours of “sweat equity” putting the finishing touches on her home and volunteering at other HFH GLA sites, in addition to making a manageable down payment and paying back a zero-interest mortgage.
