More than 10 CBRE Asset Services employees from our Greater Los Angeles Young Professionals Group participated in Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles' (Habitat LA) Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity Build-a-Thon (HBAT) on November 8, 2014. Hear what a few of our volunteers have to say about the experience and opportunity to make a difference in their community. "I have always loved the idea of working for a greater cause, and building with Habitat for Humanity has given me an opportunity to change lives by revitalizing our local neighborhoods. It was gratifying to see all the progress that our team was able to make in just a few hours. Overall it was an amazing and eye-opening experience that has changed my perspectives on social responsibility. We had so much fun and I'd love ...

Posted by Sylvia Bautista, Homeowner Relations Case Manager & Proud Habitat Homeowner: This week we celebrated World Habitat Day (WHD), a day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. For me it’s a day where words travel through social media, word of mouth, and people’s hearts about the importance of affordable housing. This year’s World Habitat Day was especially inspiring, since I had an opportunity to participate in six home dedications. Habitat LA staff and board members visited families and dedicated homes in the City of Long Beach. Through these dedications and home visits, I had the opportunity to see the true impact affordable housing has on families, children, and our community. Mr. Chanto, lives with his wife and two daughters in a beautiful Spanish style home. ...

Guest Blog Post by Kim McManus, International Pastor, Mosaic LA and Habitat LA board member Today, Monday, October 6th, is World Habitat Day, a day dedicated by the United Nations to recognize the basic need for decent and affordable housing in a world where it is lacking for over one billion people.  To help fight this problem, I am in Vietnam with several others from greater Los Angeles to build Habitat homes for low income families.  Over the last six years, I have traveled to Haiti, Bangladesh, Nicaragua, and throughout greater Los Angeles seeking to put God’s love into action to build homes, communities, and hope. One thing I have learned from my experiences is that every donation to Habitat LA makes such a difference in the lives of families in need.  The Ramirez family is just one example.  For ...

Posted by Karen Moore, ReStore Materials Acquisitions Manager The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is such a BRILLIANT concept! Our ReStores provide a solution for items that one person may no longer have a use for, but to another person, it’s exactly what they need. Say for example, someone is purchasing a new refrigerator, but their old one is just a few years old and in perfectly good condition. Once donated to the ReStore, the older frig is sold for a fraction of its value to someone else. Everybody Wins! And here’s the icing on this delicious cake!...The money that is made from the sale of that frig and everything else sold at the ReStore, helps us to build and renovate more homes! Actually, about 9 homes per year! It’s my job at the Los Angeles Habitat affiliate to increase the material donations to ...

In honor of World Habitat Day on October 6th, we invited some of our partner homeowners to share their stories about homeownership.  It is because of these wonderful families we do what we do and it's because of our volunteers and supporters we are able to do it.  Thank you. Angelica Cortez-Hernandez Lynwood, CA Homeownership is important to my family and me because it has given us a home we can now call our own. My sister and I began working at early ages so that we could help with rent, utility bills, food and so forth. Even though we all worked, it was never enough to save towards a 15%-20% home down payment. Sometimes owning a home seemed impossible but then our mom would say “no se preucupen, con ganas todo se puede en este mundo,” which translates to “don’t worry, anything is ...
